As a scientist-owned and science- and technology- driven company, MiTeGen has been developing innovative solutions for X-ray and electron-based diffraction and imaging and for biomolecular and pharmaceutical R&D since 2004. We're looking for talented innovators to join our team as we continue to expand our capabilities and market reach.
The X-ray and Cryo-EM Application and Methods Development Scientist:
- Works with the CTO, R&D Engineering Manager, and other R&D staff.
- Assists in developing new methods and technologies for biomolecular X-ray crystallography and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy.
- Works with facility managers, beamline scientists, and end users to identify challenges and develop solutions.
- Designs and performs experiments to validate concepts and technologies.
- Prepares samples for and collects data using X-ray crystallography and single-particle cryo-EM, and analyzes the resulting data.
- Explores approaches to solving challenging application-oriented problems.
- Assists in applied research and conducts directed research tasks both on-site at MiTeGen and at major R&D facilities available at Cornell University.
- Helps prepare white papers, journal manuscripts, patent applications, and SBIR proposals.
- Takes guidance for daily activities and longer term efforts from the Engineering Manager and the CTO.
- Supports other development and production staff in their tasks and in solving issues and answering questions in your areas of expertise.
- Uses software tools for simulations and CAD design.
Must-have skills and attributes:
- Demonstrated abilities with:
- X-ray diffraction/imaging and/or cryo-electron microscopy
- X-ray/cryoEM data analysis
- Basic wet lab protocols
- MS Word, Excel
- Ability to search for, understand, and explain journal articles in relevant fields and adapt their findings to new methods and applications
- Solid math skills
- Good hands / ability to manipulate small fragile samples
- Basic programming skills relevant to data collection and analysis
- Ability to work as part of a tightly-knit small team
- Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision
- Estimate the time required to complete a task
- Commit and complete tasks on time and on budget
Additionally, the Methods Development Scientist must:
- Work well with others and contribute positively to team morale
- Take direction from the CTO and engineering staff
- Communicate component, product, and process improvements, enhancements and concerns
- Know when to ask for help
- Have a growth mindset and be willing to expand their skillset into new domains (guidance and training supplied)
- Write a complete, concise, accurate report on an activity
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in multiple areas:
- X-ray and/or electron diffraction and imaging
- Preparation of biomolecular samples for analysis
- Diffraction and image analysis software
- Biomolecular model building and refinement software
- Apparatus design, construction, and testing
- Cryogenics
- Programming for modeling and simulation
Experience: Ideally 5 years or more; can include graduate work.
Education: We are looking for candidates with a Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in a science or engineering field, including Biophysics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Physics, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
Physical Requirements: The position requires the ability to efficiently and accurately perform tasks at a computer workstation, and to safely use various laboratory equipment and perform basic prototype and product assembly tasks using hand and power tools.
Work Environment: MiTeGen employees work in a mixed office / laboratory / small-production environment, where all employees maintain a safe, clean, orderly workspace and all contribute to a positive, encouraging environment. Some work will be performed at major research facilities available at Cornell University including CHESS and at other US synchrotrons and cryoEM facilities

Position Description:
The Research and Development Scientist / Engineer:
- Works for the R&D Engineering Manager and collaborates with the CTO.
- Takes guidance for daily activities and longer term efforts from the Engineering Manager and the CTO.
- Supports other development and production staff in their tasks and in solving issues and answering questions in your areas of expertise.
- Discusses challenges with customers and identifies important problems in need of novel solutions.
- Explores approaches to solving challenging application-oriented problems.
- Assists in applied research and conducts directed research tasks both on-site at MiTeGen and at major R&D facilities available at Cornell University.
- Uses software tools for simulations and CAD design.
- Designs and microfabricates structures and devices using standard microfabrication tools (photolithography, thin film deposition, plasma etching, etc.).
- Performs simple wet chemistry taks.
- Designs, constructs, and modifies mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical assemblies.
- Uses a variety of materials characterization tools (e.g., SEM, TEM, PLM).
- Develops testing plans and protocols.
- Identifies and works with vendors to obtain components with desired specifications.
- Uses software tools to perform product integration and testing tasks.
- Performs Design Verification Tests.
- Uses specifications and drawings to develop mechanical QA test devices.
- Performs assembly tasks as required.
- Assists in preparing patent applications, journal articles, user guides/manuals, and SBIR proposals.
Must-have skills and attributes:
