BEAMLINE SPOTLIGHT
BL-17A at the Photon Factory
A Protein Micro-Crystallography, In Situ Diffraction and Low-Energy SAD Experiment Beamline
(Image of in-situ diffraction from a crystallization.)
BL-17A at the Photon Factory, Japan, has now a capability to perform in situ diffraction experiments. A new diffractometer in this beamline has two goniometer heads. The horizontal goniometer head is for a standard diffraction experiment with standard loops. The vertical goniometer is specifically designed for in-situ diffraction experiments, and has a gripper which can handle any SBS-format crystallization plates, including the In Situ-1™ plate by MiTeGen. By using the vertical goniometer, a series of diffraction images from a single crystal on the plate can be recorded by rotating it.

INVENTORS WIN R&D 100 AWARD!
Compact Dynamic Beamstop Developers Awarded at R&D 100 Event
The inventors of the technology that enabled the development of the Sentinel™ Beamstop System were recently presented with an R&D 100 award for excellence in innovation.
Pictured above: Diane Bryant & Simon Morton from the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
Through collaborative development, the engineering team at MiTeGen worked with the inventors (and award winners!), Diane Bryant, Simon Morton, and Marc Allaire at the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, to develop the commercial product line of Sentinel Watchdog™ beamstops. This system is now being installed at beamlines all around the world for the direct measurement of X-ray beams.
Sentinel Watchdog™ Beamstop Features
- Know exact sample radiation dose exposure
- Monitor beamline stability continuously
- Calibrate X-ray beam intensity
- Record intensity during data collection
- Micro-sized for minimum shadowing
- Record long-term photon delivery metrics
